Lesson 2: Bratty Ney
Unit 3: Exercise: Bratty Ney
Why 00:10
- To decrease tension, especially in the neck surrounding the vocal cords
- Reduce thickness of the vocal cords
- To relax outer muscles, easy transition from low notes to high notes (chest to head)
- This exercise helps maintain cord closure as you go through the first bridge
- Gives you a more vocal cord participation in the sound
What 00:29
On the pitch demonstrated, Go from chest voice into head voice without strain, reach, breaks, cracks, or flips
How 00:39
- Soft to Medium volume
- Stay bratty
- Move quickly to the “e” part of “Aaaeeee”
Your Turn
Men: 02:31
Women: 03:27
Technique Tips 04:20
- Softer is better. Just loud enough to hold the vocal cords together. If you feel them brake, do it a slightly harder, but not excessively harder. Softer, quieter, relaxed is better than harder, louder, tense.
- Don’t let vocal cords crack
- Bend over as you do the exercises to prevent crack or break and to help hit the Pitch. Look down at the floor, bend your knees.
- Some students who tend to let go of the cord structure may need to do these harder. You will feel more compression as you hold the cords together so they don’t crack or break. Again try and do it as demonstrated.
- Don’t lose the bratty sound. This results in pulling too much weight of the vocal cords upward. The bratty thins the vocal cords significantly
- I recommend you record yourself with your phone, computer, mp3 recorder, etc.
