Hi, I’m Chuck Gilmore, International Vocal Coach and Founder of Power to Sing.  I’m going to show you four different ways to sing in chest voice. Three of them will be wrong and/or damaging to your voice.

Chest voice is the foundation of your singing voice. Get it wrong, never be strong. BY THE END OF THIS VIDEO, YOU’LL know how to get it right and how to sing with a strong chest voice like other great singers.

Please choose which one of these four ways of singing chest voice is right? (Singing Hey Jude)

  1. Chest Voice (pulled up, too loud, high larynx)
  2. Chest Voice (Light-No Chest) (Inadequate Cord Closure)
  3. Chest Voice (Flip-Falsetto) (High Larynx into Flip or sometimes just let go)
  4. Chest Voice + into Mix (Friendly cord compression- Ideal adduction, balance of air and muscle)

Which one is correct? If you answered number four, you are correct!

What is wrong with number one? (replay) The answer is Chest Voice was Pulled up and the larynx was high.

What is wrong with number two? (replay) The answer is the vocal cords were not coming together adequately.

What is wrong with number three? (replay) The answer is the larynx was so high that I had to Flip into Falsetto.

Why is number 4 Correct?

  1. It was very speech-like – it sounded like I talk
  2. I maintained friendly cord compression- there was Ideal cord adduction. The vocal cords were not too tight or too loose. There was an easy and consistent flow of air through the vocal cords.
  3. I bridged…meaning, I sang with a blend (or Mix) of chest and head voice in the transition from chest to head voice.

In other words, the vocal cords remained appropriately adducted, there was no reaching or strain, my larynx was low and resting, and my vowels were consistent as I sang from chest into my bridge and started mixing.

Can you tell me which very popular female singer from England, consistently pulled her chest voice too high causing her to have TWO vocal cord hemorrhages and vocal cord surgery?  Leave her name in the comments section below.

How can you get chest voice right and get it strong?

  • Sing like you talk…if you talk normally. Doing so will keep your vocal cords consistent like this: [demo a,b,c’s],  not like this: [demo a,b,c’s with cords too relaxed] Done correctly and your chest voice becomes the strong foundation of great singing.
  • Practice medium to medium soft- Just loud enough to get the cords to come together appropriately. Over weeks and months gradually increase loudness. This will lead to real and sustainable power in chest voice and throughout your range.
  • You must learn to bridge. That means you must learn to get out of your chest and into head voice without the mistakes you heard above.

Pulling chest, singing breathy with little or no chest voice, flipping into falsetto, and Mix are the names of the Four Vocal Types. One of these likely describes what you tend to do when you sing from chest voice, through the bridge and into head voice.

Which Vocal Type are you? To help you discover your vocal type so you can successfully transition out of chest voice as you sing higher, I’ve prepared a Free PDF entitled Get Your Vocal Type.

This PDF contains links to a vocal test, which I call the PowerTest. Take the quiz and discover your vocal type. Then watch the videos about your vocal type and download the free exercises and start learning how to bridge. You can get the PDF by clicking on this card, or click the link in the description below this video.
