I was listening to Tim Ferriss #TheTimFerrissShow interview Ryan Flaherty @ryanflaherty1 who is the Senior Director of Performance at Nike. He said “Don’t buy complexity; the simpler you make your training, the better the results become.”

Can this apply to learning to sing too? Yes!

In this video I’ll give you two simple vocal exercises for powerful results.

Today’s complexity demands greater simplicity.

Many think if something is simple, it won’t produce results.

With singing, if you want complex vocal exercises because you think they work better, you may lose out.

Two Simple Vocal Exercises for Powerful Results

Here are two profoundly simple vocal exercises that anyone can do.

If done exactly as I show you, they can revolutionize your singing.

They help you sing higher into your head voice without straining, cracking, or breaking into falsetto.

They help you sing into head voice, maybe further than you’ve ever sung before, without any break or change in tone.

The first one is a “bratty ney”. Say it bratty or witchy and soft. [Demo]  Men and women sing it the same way.

Men do it like this: [Demo] Women do it like this: [Demo]

The second exercise is  “Goo”. As you go higher you let it go “hooty” like a Hoot Owl: [Demo]

Men do it like this: [Demo] Women do it like this: [Demo]

These two simple vocal exercises give powerful results. Just because they’re simple, doesn’t mean they’re easy. It takes time and patience to extract their tremendous benefit.

Knowing your vocal type is another simple but powerful way to improve your singing. Why? Because once you know and understand your vocal type, you can do vocal exercises designed specifically to help eliminate the negative and develop the positive in your voice.

Go to PowerToSing.com and take the vocal test, which I call the PowerTest. Take the quiz and discover your vocal type. Then visit the Knowledge Center and watch the videos about your vocal type.

Download the free exercises for your vocal type and start practicing them. They’re simple and powerful. You’ll begin to experience improvement quickly.

  1. Hi Jim: You can. I important thing is that you are doing them correctly. Just doing them correctly will begin to enlarge your range and so it is a natural extension your practice. If not done correctly, trying to extend your range may introduce more problems. Only work to increase range if you can maintain good balance and coordination you’ve achieved by doing the exercises correctly.

  2. I sing along with mp3’s for men. That gives me one set of start/stop notes and range. Can/Should I adjust the range to start lower or end higher as my voice improves?
