Ep.78: How to Train My Voice to Sing Higher #4 – Special Exercise to Thin Vocal Cords

This video is part #4 of a series on “How to Train My Voice to Sing Higher”.

How to Train My Voice to Sing Higher - Sometimes it feels like there's a vice squeezing our neck!

When we try and sing higher, it seems like sometimes there’s a vice squeezing our neck making it impossible to go any higher.

Inside this video I’ll give you an exercise that will take all that away and make singing higher so much easier.

Have you ever felt that way? Like there was something squeezing your throat as you sing higher?

This feeling might be caused by the vocal cords remaining thick and heavy as you sing higher. When this happens, there’s no way you will sing higher into your head voice.

If you do sing higher, you will be pulling chest voice higher. This is bad for you and the audience.

How to Train My Voice to Sing Higher

Here is an amazing exercise that will help reduce the mass of the vibrating vocal cords and make going into head voice easier.

It is the word “ney”.

You use it on the 5 tone scale with the men starting at the G below middle C and the Women starting at Middle C. Each voice goes up 5 half-tones and back down. It sounds like this. [Demo]

How to Train My Voice to Sing Higher – Benefits of Ney

Here are some benefits to using “Ney”. It:

  • Reduces the mass or weight of the vocal cords, thinning them as they tense and stretch.
  • Helps keep the vocal cords connected so they don’t break into falsetto. [Demo]
  • Gives you a more solid “speech-like” feeling to your singing voice on each note.
  • Helps the resonance shift easily from the chest to head cavities.

Tips for Using Ney

Here are some tips for using the Ney.

  • Keep the volume at medium to medium soft.

  • Add a slight bratty or witchy sound if your vocal cords want to break. Like this. [Demo]

  • Once you are able to do the exercise connected without tension, use less and less bratty sound until you can do it normal

  • Pronounce it n“eh”y rather that “nay”. It’s easier for the “eh” sound to resonant in your head. It will also help thin the cords. It sound’s like this. [Demo]

This simple exercise will give your voice the ability to sing higher. It helps balance and coordinate the thinning of the vocal cords.

Discontinue the bratty or witchy sound once you can sing into your head voice easily without disconnecting into falsetto. This added sound, while helpful at first, tends to raise the larynx higher than your speech-level, which is not an ideal way to sing.

This exercise is very useful for singers with vocal types light chest-no chest, pulled chest-high larynx or flip-falsetto. Do you know your vocal type? I don’t mean whether you are soprano, alto, tenor or bass.

Your vocal type is what you tend to do when you sing. Visit PowerToSing.com and take the vocal test, which I call the PowerTest. Take the quiz and discover your vocal type.

Visit the Knowledge Center and watch the videos about your vocal type. Download the free exercises. They will help you balance, coordinate and train your voice to sing higher.
