Five Singing Techniques REQUIRED for Every Style

To be a really great singer here are Five Singing Techniques REQUIRED for Every Style of singing.

Leave one of these out and you will be limiting your choices and cheating your fans.

Yes, I said cheating your fans!  Why? Because if you can’t do something with your voice that you could do with good technique, you’re not giving your very best as an artist.

If you’re limited by your technique, no matter what style or genre of music you’re singing, you are incomplete as an artist. Why would you want that?

Five Singing Techniques REQUIRED for Every Style

Here are 5 Singing Techniques REQUIRED for every style and genre of singing that EVERY singer can achieve.

#1. Excellent Pitch.  I didn’t say perfect pitch. I said excellent pitch. This is especially true in a live performance. Although I’m told you can auto-tune live performances now as well.

This may be the hardest of the 5 to accomplish if you don’t have a natural ability to hear and sing the correct pitch. It’s also where discerning audiences are less forgiving. If you struggle with pitch, you’ll have to work hard to correct this. Try these strategies:

  • Take piano, violin or something similar. This will help develop your ear and your musicianship.
  • Take ear-training courses online. Get ear-training apps and start working with them.
  • Listen to great singers. Listen. Listen. Listen.
  • A small percentage of humans are born with amusia. This means you physically can’t distinguish pitch. Go see an ENT doctor for a definitive diagnosis if you suspect you were born with this condition.

#2. Bridging. This means you learn where your voice transitions from chest to head voice and learn to do it successfully.

  • Doing this will allow you to transition into high notes without straining.
  • You’ll be able to sing higher without cracking or breaking.
  • Your voice will sound like one voice…not two different voices for low and high notes.
  • In many instances you can increase your upper range significantly and add a few low notes too.

#3. Vocal Cord Adduction. This means your vocal cords coming together.

  • Your goal is to have a balance between the air from the lungs and your vocal cords, so that whether soft, medium or loud, your vocal cords come together appropriately for the demands of your song. This gives you a stronger, fuller tone quality.

#4. Sing with a Mix or a Blend of Chest and Head Voice. A mix voice is another benefit of learning to bridge.

  • Singing with a Mix voice gives you more vocal presence as you sing from chest and into head voice. This enables your voice to have a “chesty” quality, even though you are singing with both head and chest voice simultaneously.
  • This also adds strength and presence to your head voice.

#5. Singing with Confidence. If it’s easy to do, you are confident.

  • Singing with confidence is a result of technique so solid and comfortable that your singing is effortless. You’re free to lose yourself in your song. You’re free to tell your story.
  • Confidence born of great technique gives you many vocal tools to create your style and distinguish yourself within your genre. Now you’re virtually unlimited to make whatever vocal choices you want or need.

Learning Your Vocal Type Helps You Learn to Bridge

Learning your vocal type is an excellent way to begin learning to bridge. Do you know your vocal type? I’m not talking about whether you’re soprano, alto, tenor or bass. Your vocal type describes what you tend to do as you sing from chest to head voice.

Visit PowerToSing.com and take the vocal test, which I call the PowerTest. Take the quiz and discover your vocal type. Then visit the Knowledge Center and watch the videos about your vocal type. Download the free exercises and start practicing them. They’ll help you progress rapidly.

  1. Hi Jacqueline: I’m glad you know why you struggle with confidence, which is a great first step. I suggest you perform as often as you can. It will continue to help change your experience from a time you were not appreciated to widespread appreciation. Your confidence will grow the more you see and hear the positive feedback from your audiences. You can do it!

  2. My obstacle is confidence
I was raised in a large and talented family during the time when little girls
were to be seen and not heard
I have so many talents that my musicianship was frowned upon
    and housekeeping was more appreciated
When I hear my voice now, as beautiful as it is, I anticipate an
    undesired reaction
This alone threatens every performance of every song
ESPECIALLY WHEN I’M BEING WATCHED !!!

    Thanks Chuck,
    Jacqueline
