When you sound airy, especially on high notes, your listeners lose interest. They want to be impressed. They want their ears to vibrate with the penetrating strength of your voice.
Here’s two steps you must follow to develop that penetrating power in your voice when you sing high notes.
#1: You must learn to bridge. That means you must learn to transition from chest to head voice without losing power. You must sing higher without straining, cracking, breaking or breathiness.
The fastest way to learn to bridge from chest to head voice is to get your vocal type and then do exercises for your unique vocal type.
Your vocal type is not whether you’re soprano, alto, tenor or bass. Your vocal type describes what your voice tends to do as you sing higher. For example, do you tend to strain and/or break into falsetto?
There are exercises designed for your vocal type which immediately help you to bridge successfully, that is, sing from your chest through the bridge into your head voice.
To quickly discover your vocal type, download this free PDF entitled “Get Your Vocal Type”.
First the PDF, “Get Your Vocal Type”, has expired. Instead click this link: https://www.powertosing.com/discover-your-vocal-type-wt
Next, take the test and verify your vocal type. Then click this link and watch the videos about your vocal type. These videos have several free exercises for your vocal type.
#2: Once you learn to bridge so you can sing from chest to head voice in a smooth and connected tone without straining or breaking or breathiness, here are three simple exercises for quick power on high notes. Please note that these simple exercises will only be simple if you have done number 1 above, begun the exercises for your vocal type.
Don’t neglect that critical step.
Here are Three Simple Exercises for Quick Power
Exercise number 1: Exaggerated Ney – N[ae] on an octave repeat scale
Men and women will start at the top of their first bridge and go down 4 ½ steps. This exercise sounds like this. [Demo] In this exercise, and in the following exercises, please notice I sing the second vowel where the first one established it. [Demo] Don’t open the second or third vowel beyond where the first one lives. This would be wrong [Demo wide]. That is opening too wide and becomes pulled chest. This is the right way. [Demo] That keeps it in head voice or mix. Follow this rule on the following three exercises.
First the men, then the ladies. Ready guys, begin.
Now the ladies. Ready, begin.
Exercise number 2: Ney – N[ae] – Noo (as in book) on the same octave repeat scale.
This exercise sounds like this. [Demo]
First the men, then the ladies. Ready guys, begin.
Now the ladies. Ready, begin.
Exercise number 3: Ney – N[ae] – Nuh on the same octave repeat scale.
This exercise sounds like this. [Demo]
First the men, then the ladies. Ready guys, begin.
Now the ladies. Ready ladies, begin.
If these exercises are are hard for you, you need to revisit the the exercises for your vocal type.
