Singing Lessons – Multiple Genres or Specialize?

Singing Lessons – Multiple Genres or Specialize?  This week I received this question. Is it ok to sing jazz, pop and classical at one time?  She was basically asking if she sang multiple genres would it slow her learning and progress. I sent her a video of Michael Bolton singing opera.

There are some advantages and disadvantages of singing multiple genres. Inside this video I’ll show you some artists, for better or for worse, who have done it.

So if you are taking singing lessons can you sing multiple genres or should you specialize?

Singing Lessons – Multiple Genres or Specialize?

Of course there are advantages and disadvantages to either choice. If you’re planning a career as a singer, I recommend you choose a genre and stay with it until you have a solid brand and you are known instantly for your music and your voice.

After that you can go do other genres. If you don’t, you’ll risk confusing your fans and you won’t be well known for anything.

If you’re going to major in vocal performance in college, I recommend focusing on whichever specialty you’re pursuing, whether it be opera, classical, musical theater, jazz, etc. After you graduate, if you’re going professional, stay with your genre until you’re well established and in demand. Then make your decision.

If you aren’t pursuing a career, why not sing multiple genres?

If you sing musical theater, you’ll find most genres are available in this music.  Think Hamilton (rap), Big River (country), Hello Dolly and King and I (Broadway Standards), Crazy for You and Nice Work If You Can Get It (Gershwin) and Jesus Christ, Superstar (Rock) Aida, (Pop-Rock) Pirates of Penzance (Opera) and so forth. The variety of music is one reason why I love musical theatre.
